The Top Five Tips For Taking Your Digital Camera On Vacation

One of the most common places for people to use their digital camera is while they are away on vacation, and no wonder, because we all want to preserve those special events and memories as much as we can. But digital cameras require their own advance preparation for the trip. So here are the top five tips for taking your digital camera along with you on vacation.

1. More so than any other camera, digital cameras rely on a good solid power source, usually its batteries. If you haven't used your digital camera in a while, the batteries you have may not be sufficiently charged for your entire trip. And even if your current batteries are sufficiently charged, it's a very good idea to have extras along with you on the trip because you just don't know how much use your camera will get and you don't want to be caught short at the wrong time. Sometimes, batteries for certain digital cameras can be very specialized too. So it's always a good idea to buy batteries before you leave to have them handy with you on the trip.

2. You'll want to give attention to your storage cards before you leave as well, and be sure that you have enough for the trip. Remember, storage media is sort of like film in that if you have no way to upload the photos each day, it will eventually get full and you will need a replacement to continue shooting. Also before you leave check the storage card that you have in the camera to see what images are currently stored there. If there are photos on the card that you wish to keep, now is the time to upload them while you are still at home and then wipe the card clean for use on the vacation.

3. Taking a camera on any vacation or trip can subject it to a lot of use and getting banged around if you are not careful. So having a good camera bag to put your digital camera in while on vacation will be very important. This is a common problem with many people, and it can all be solved with the use of a tripod. Obviously, you can take a large tripod with you on some excursions as it would just be too heavy to carry, but here's where a mini tripod can come in very handy. Customer Review: Does not fit all digital cameras as advertised

This product is definitely not recommended for advanced amateur astrophotographers who want to do serious guided afocal photography with their digital cameras. The product was advertised as an afocal adapter that would fit all digital cameras and all telescopes. It did not fit my HP 945 digital camera since the camera support base was over an inch too short, and I assume it will not fit any similar digital cameras (the tripod socket to lens front is about 4 inches for the HP 945). I had to improvise with other photo accessories in order to extend the distance of the camera from the eyepiece. The construction is primarily plastic, the only metal being the support piece that attaches to the eyepiece. Because of this, the plastic camera platform visibly flexes, causing an angular displacement of the camera lens from the eyepiece, that I needed to correct with a shim. The plastic knobs and the attached plastic screws for adjusting the alignment platform may easily strip after extensive use. With my camera, the entire platform was far too heavy to be supported by the eyepiece alone, and another improvisation was required for additional support from the bottom of the telescope. Because of the time I have already invested in making it work, I won't return this product, but I would not recommend it for any serious afocal astrophotography. Possibly useful for birders or beginner amateur astronomers who what to learn something about astrophotography using a small digital camera.

Customer Review: Solid, Heavy, Too Big

I've owned this Celestron 93626 Universal Digital Camera Adapter for two weeks. I used it for birding, digiscoping. It is solidly built but a bit too heavy (over balancing my Kowa 60mm scope). Also, it does NOT fit ultra compact cameras. My Canon SD800is is too small to work with this product. I assume that similarly sized cameras will also not work (3.5" x 2").



Amazon has great customer service and returns. So you may wish to try it out yourself.

In a recent Readers Digest an article explained that ALL Telescopes are shaky to a point unless you set it up an solid ground, that took care of the shaky problem. Its hard to move everyday, with the tripod open its very difficult to get through a standard doorway, alot of work to get the legs folded up for every trip outside. the Optics is great, higher magnification is blurry but ALL telescopes do that...all in all? I say its a great star gazer!

This book is inspirational; there are 4 or 5 very detailed step by step exercises. There are, also, many example pictures of finished work, like the one on the cover. It is a pity that the author has chosen the "less beautiful" pictures for developing the exercises. Don't expect to find how to make the one of the cover.

Customer Review: Some great concepts - very sloppy editing

Versace's book introduces some great concepts about seeing and handling images that are not found in your typical Photoshop book and are always given from the perspective of a practicing photographer rather than a computer jocky. It is designed however as a tutorial with the intention of having the reader actually do all the exercises not just once, but several times. All great advice, but there is one aspect of this book that is exasperating. The editing is terrible. I have found this problem with many technical tutorial books. I believe it is because the editor does not have the knowledge to know when something is amiss in the instructions and the author is too close to his material to see the ambiguities and layout mistakes are never picked up. In layout mistakes, the author never sees them and the editor has no clue if they exist or not. It is only the poor reader trying to follow very detailed instructions that picks up these gafs.



In this book, I found every tutorial had mistakes in the instructions with steps out of order, ambiguity in instructions, mismatched example images for the step involved, layer masks that did not match the instructions. Truly maddening. These types of books should be proofed by a student so that these mistakes can be reported and fixed.



So I have started doing the exercises, but when I come to a step that has mistakes, I just have to wing it. Frustrating for an expensive book.



One reviewer mentioned that the exercises depended on using proprietary plug-ins. Well, he does encourage the use of Nik plug-ins, but does usually give you a work around with the exception of the Nik Skylight filter. He also notes that you can freely download time-limited trials that can be used to do the exercises. I agree that the arrangement between Versace and Nik is just a bit to tight in this book.



Overall I am glad that I am working through this book, but poor production practices have made it a struggle and thus my 3 star rating.



Also it should be noted that Versace's handling of images is quite theatrical with very strong lighting effects that will strike some viewers as phoney looking. This however is this photographer's style. I believe that the concepts he is trying to impart can all be used but much more subtly if his style seems way over the top to you.

Underwater Digital Cameras 101 For Landlubbers

First came the camera. Then there was the underwater camera. After that came the digital camera ? and now we have underwater digital cameras. Underwater digital cameras are ideal for capturing the beauty of the undersea world (or the bottom of your swimming pool if you have that special artistic eye!). They are used by both scientists and scuba divers. Digital cameras come in many well-known brands including Kodak, Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Olympus. For the reviewers that rated this DVD poorly because it didn't contain the advanced information they were looking for, check out the title of the DVD... Here's a hint: The first word in the title is INTRODUCTION.



For anyone new to the Canon EOS 5D, this DVD is a great (not perfect) introduction. I've been shooting 35mm film with SLR's for 20+ years, but switching to the 5D was a whole new world when it came to operating the camera. This DVD eased the transition to digital (and the 5D in particular). I return to this DVD for a quick review every couple of months.



The material is presented clearly and in a organized way. A methodology for capturing consistent images is presented and, although certainly not the only method, it is at least a starting point. The Canon flashes have a short section on this DVD too.



I found this DVD useful and informative and consequently I plan to buy Blue Crane Digital's Introduction to the Canon Rebel XTi, and Introduction to the Canon Speedlight 580 EX II.



Oh, for the reviewer that said you can find the same information in the 5D manual - maybe you can point out the section in the manual that talks about depth of field, or basics of composition. I must have missed those sections. ;-)



Customer Review: What is this, QVC?

You know that point in your past where you might have stayed awake longer than usual, maybe late night television was on and all of a sudden you hit infomercial hour; suddenly, you have some pleasant person trying to sell you on their product, or make you feel like they're the ultimate source on information on the item they're attempting to sell you, meanwhile never exhibiting any real knowledge on the product; think, for instance, QVC. Now relate this to your newly acquired and or possibly yet to be purchased Canon 5D. That's the best way to describe this item, in my opinion, it feels extremely low budget (which isn't a big deal if it actually serves its purpose) and more so covers functions of the camera vaguely, giving hints at the more advanced aspects of using the camera but never actually comes full circle to make use of showing you how to make use of what the camera can do, and or giving you the actual information I'm sure a lot of you would want out of paying for an item like this. They give you one final measure of assurance at the end by saying something along the lines of suggesting you watch the DVD again if you needed to remember how to do anything you were just shown. Honestly, by the time the DVD was over I was expecting it to finally get to the point where it might start to convey items of real interest or more advanced techniques to use with this camera. While to someone new to photography, digital photography and or using cameras in general this might be a great starting point, considering the current price point (and previous) for this model camera, I think they severely underestimated their client base when structuring, planning and executing the delivery and knowledge found on this disc. For anyone with a general idea of how to use their camera looking to take their skills to the next level, I would personally suggest investing your money elsewhere.

Customer Review: Beyond the (Measley) User's Guides

This DVD was just what I needed to fully understand the capabilities of my digital camera. As they say right in the video, the user's guides that come with the camera are comparable to the owner's manual for your car; they give a lot of information about the car, but don't teach you how to drive. This video picks up where the user's guides leave off.

Not only do they explain all of the settings, how to adjust them & what they're used for, but they also give good general photography tips (i.e.; composition & the "law of thirds.") They also get into photo & movie editing (I'd recently given up on the latter, but now I "get it.") Although I had a vague notion that my camera was probably capable of a lot, now I fully understand those capabilities & have the knowledge required to use them to the fullest.

I highly recommend this video to anyone "new" to these types of Canon cameras.

This item is a great idea, however it does not install on windows
xp professional, even though the intel faq says it does. The intel customer support says that there are major problmes with the mouse, keyboard and gamepad (they only list the minor problems on there compatibility faq)), they dont bother to tell you that they do not work at all on many peoples xp professional

The Duracell Mobile Charger (CEF23) is an extremely versatile charger. It actually has two operating modes, as selected by the MODE button:



1. As an AA/AAA NiMH battery charger, or

2. As an USB charger for USB-powered devices.



In battery-charger mode, the unit is a smart charger that accepts 1-4 AA/AAA cells in any combinations. The charger can be powered by either 100-240V universal AC input, or 12V DC input. This means you can also operate it from your vehicle's cigarette lighter adapter. Note that the car adapter is included in the CEF23DX4N, but not in the CEF23DX2.



The charging current is 550mA for each cell. So it takes about 4 hours to full charge up the included 2100mAh low-self-discharge cells (which are the Duracell-equivalent of Sanyo eneloop). I consider this a good compromise between shorter charging time and longer battery lifespan.



One really nice feature of this charger is that it has four individual battery status indicator lights. The status light for each cell turns RED when charging, GREEN when the cell is fully charged. It will even blink if you accidentally inserted an alkaline cell.



In USB charger mode, the unit generates a regulated 5-volt supply at its USB socket. You can then connect an USB-powered device (such as IPOD charger) to this unit. Input power for this USB charger can be from one of the following sources:

1. From 100-240V universal AC input,

2. From 12V DC input (car adapter), or

3. From four AA/AAA NiMH cells in the battery compartment.



The third way is the most interesting, because in case of emergency, you can even use 4 alkaline cells to power this USB charger, in order to charge up your cell phone's battery.



I must say that this charger is really well designed. It is a great bargain even if all you need is a simple battery charger. The USB charger mode is just an extra bonus.

I bought this two months ago. It works really well so far and reads accurately. I used this daily. There's only one thing I don't like about it...that's the head of the stethoscope is stuck to the sphygmomanometer, so you can't really take it out and play around with it.

As Internet connections have matured to faster and faster broadband pipelines, webcam manufacturers have been keeping pace with higher resolutions and improved optics to take advantage of the larger bandwidth. And more than just communicating over chat and VoIP, webcams are increasingly used to broadcast Truman Show-esque live video feeds of one's every move (such as at Justin.tv) as well as high-quality mini-movies uploaded to sharing sites. And that's where the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 really shines, with its 2-megapixel image sensor, smooth-tracking autofocus, high-end Carl Zeiss optics, and HD video capabilities (with the capability of recording video at 960 by 720 pixels).

The combination of Logitech's RightLight technology and 2-megapixel Carl Zeiss optics produce improved clarity and lighting (Pro 9000 on the left, MacBook integrated camera on right--both captured in the same lighting conditions).

First, a little about Logitech's touted technological and optical advantages. Designed by Carl Zeiss (known for high-end film and digital camera lenses), the Pro 9000's optics use a five-element lens arranged into four optical elements. As a result, the lens focuses the light onto the sensor with maximum detail and minimal aberrations. The 2-megapixel lens also offers an autofocus mechanism that automatically adjusts as your face moves about. It also incorporates Logitech's RightLight and RightSound technologies, which improves the webcam's image quality under difficult lighting conditions and provides noise cancellation, respectively.

We found the autofocus feature to be much smoother than another similarly specced webcam from Creative that we previously reviewed (which felt stuttery to our video chat partners), and the RightLight feature was able to render an image of our face in both highly backlit and low-light situations--something that other webcams we've tested have completely failed at. And the combination of RightLight, Carl Zeiss optics, and the two-megapixel sensor helped to enrich both the clarity and the color of our images.

While it's true that broadband Internet has gained speed, unfortunately none of the major chat or VoIP programs are can stream the high-definition video (960 by 720 pixels) that the Pro 9000 can capture. Thus, this feature is really only usable for recording video to your hard drive and either uploading to a video sharing service like YouTube or for inclusion into a movie project to be burned to disc. The Pro 9000 also enables you to take still images at larger than its native 2-megapixel sensor via software interpolation (up to an 8-megapixel resolution). Note, however, that shooting at a higher resolution causes a lengthier shutter lag.

The Pro 9000 offers easy plug-and-play operability on either a Windows PC or a Mac--just slide in the USB 2.0 plug, select the camera from your chosen video chatting program (it works seamlessly with Skype, Yahoo!, Windows Live, SightSpeed, and iChat), and you're good to go. While the Pro 9000 works brilliantly right out of the box, you'll only be able to take advantage of software add-ons such using the included QuickCam software (which is for Windows users only).

The QuickCam Control Panel is where you can select from a host of special effect add-ons that range from a selection of avatars (such as a dinosaur or cat) to facial accessories (including a crown and Borg hardware), and a variety of filter effects. The avatars didn't seem especially responsive unless we were overly hyperactive, but the limited face add-ons and filters were more successful (with our favorite being the rotoscope animation effect).

The double-hinged clip on the back of the lightweight Pro 9000 can be articulated to fit both the thinnest notebook screens to thicker LCD TV/monitors. A rubberized is placed right below the camera housing to help prevent slippage, and the camera itself can smoothly tilt up and down about 90 degrees. The Pro 9000 has a single microphone on its right side, and while the left side has a control button that automatically opens the Logitech QuickCam software. And in the middle is a Logitech logo, which is given a red glowing halo when the camera is recording. It uses a single USB connection that does not require external power.

With its arsenal of optical advancements combined with an invitingly affordable price tag and easy portability, the QuickCam Pro 9000 is a great alternative to the standard VGA/1.3-megapixel cams built into notebooks. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

I cannot believe how excellent the video quality is. I have had some audio problems but do not know if they are attributable to the camera or Skype. There are some very helpful tips in the other reviews and I am going to try downloading software from the website and deleting the software from the disc. But a great webcam and I was so impressed I bought my daughter one so we can communicate across the miles. Highly recommended. I gave it 4 stars but if the audio problems are Skype's fault then I give it 5. Easy to clip to my monitor too.

I bought this DVD hoping I would get some useful tips on taking better pictures. I just purchased my digital Cannon XT and just playing with it for 10 minutes, I figured out everything that was covered in this DVD. I was hoping for more but got much less. If you've never used any type of camera (digital or otherwise), I would recommend this DVD but if you're looking to polish your current skills, even if your skills are minimal, try another route.

The video wastes valuable time on unnecessary graphics and plays, continually, an annoying drumbeat type music that drives many of us in the over 40 generation to hide in a quiet place. While they did not specifically cover buttons and other details of my particular camera, I thought that the techniques covered were excellent, especially the lighting techniques which I really wanted the most help with. Getting the point of view from a professional helped me think about how I approach my own shooting. I don't plan on making a living from my photography, so some of the discussion regarding building a portfolio and how to manage a pro shoot didn't really apply to me, but there was enough other useful information in the DVDs that I really didn't mind a bit. It turns out that I probably should get the Introduction DVD as well because these advanced videos made me realize my camera has tons of functions I am not familiar with.

Digital Camera Homework - Factors To Consider Before Purchasing a Digital Camera

Buying a digital camera can be a scary proposition, especially if you've only dealt with 35mm cameras in the past. Though the market used to be pretty small it's exploded, leaving consumers a huge range of options from $20 point and shoot digitals to $1,000+, professional level digital single lens reflex setups. So what sort of camera is right for you?

The biggest thing to keep in mind when buying a digital camera is what you plan on using the camera for. For example, if you want a small, easy to carry camera for taking photos at parties and emailing them to friends, you probably want a small, ultra-light camera. These cameras are point-and-shoots with little or no zoom and a relatively low resolution, but the small resolution won't matter unless you're printing the photos larger than 4x6, and the ultra-small size of these cameras makes them easy to drop into a purse or shirt pocket for a night out.

Or, maybe you want to use your digital camera in the same way you did your 35mm, sending a few photos to friends and printing others out for storage in albums or for a few larger wall hangings. Then consider buying a digital camera in the point-and-shoot range, something with a resolution between three and five mega pixels. Though these cameras may not always fit in a shirt pocket, they're still easy to carry and use. Most come with a decent optical zoom that will allow you to get close to your subject, a few different shooting modes for taking portraits, indoor, and outdoor shots, and various other features depending on the model and manufacturer. The higher resolution will allow you to print out crisp photos, either at home or at a photo processing store.

If you're buying a digital camera to compete with your 35mm SLR or want to get into more advanced digital techniques, you'll want something in between the point-and-shoot and the full-on, professional digital SLR. You fit into the "prosumer" category, squarely in between the professional and the standard consumer. In the past five years the digital camera market has really responded to this section of the market, offering up a large number of fully-featured, relatively inexpensive cameras. Digital SLRs with a full range of interchangeable lenses usually start around $1,000, while other cameras with many of the features of the SLRs but without the interchangeable lens system can be had for much less.

Whatever you're looking for, be sure to do your homework while buying a digital camera and try out a few cameras before you buy. If the camera you buy matches your needs well, you'll be taking great pictures for years.

I purchased a sandisk 64MB disk for my point and shoot camera, which I still have to this day and since it is still working well I decided to go with sandisk for the upgrade. I needed the disk for dSLR I purchased recently and considered the high capacity SD cards as they are suppose to give you a quicker response time.



I have shot a few hundred shots and there hasn't been a significant lag with this card ( I tested it against my sisters SDHC card). I haven't had a read problem with the card (I have used it with my internal card reader on my notebook, a stand alone third party reader, with the camera attached to a desktop, etc). With the price drop I probably will pick up a couple more....

aside from being user friendly, the main thing i was looking for when purchasing a gps was the "street names" capability. very helpful instead of the "turn right then keep left" old systems which was very confusing.

The case is good for what you pay: zippers feel flimsy and cheap, but that's what you get for $11. The screenuard protector it's shipped with is worthless! it's quite difficult to apply, and definitely has bubbles of air in it no matter how carefully it's laid on.

The Kroo Camera case is perfect for my Nikon Coolpix camera, and I received it in about three days after placing my order. After measuring my camera to see which of the two case sizes best suited me, I was able to select the perfect size for my needs. The case is sturdy, and the choice of colors enables you to pick the case in the color that best reflects you. The velcro strap holds the camera in place and the side pocket allows me to carry extra batteries so that I never have to worry about missing a great picture. In addition, the loop on the outside of the case makes it possible to attach a lanyard so that you can either attach it to your buckle loops on your pants or carry it hanging from your neck.
