How Digital Cameras Work?

The basic working of the Digital camera and Film camera is one and the same. Both use the shutter, lens and aperture. The Lens captures the light and then it passes it into the aperture, which controls the light and the shutter opens and closes to control the duration of light, which enters.

The major difference is the technology of capturing the image. Digital camera does not use film to store the image. In digital camera an image sensor is used to capture the image. It is a computer silicon chip. On the surface of this chip there are millions of pixels, which are photosensitive diodes.

The shutter button of the digital camera activates a metering cell, which manages the shutter speed and aperture according to the amount of light coming through the lens. When a person clicks on the camera shutter each and every pixel of the image sensor stores the intensity of the light, which falls on it by gathering an electrical charge. When strong light hits a pixel, it generates high charge and weak light generates low charge.

After the shutter closes charges from every pixel is converted into digital numbers. This series of numbers creates an image on a computer screen.

What is it that attracts people to an SLR ? One of the main reasons is that an SLR produces pictures which are of much higher quality than point-and-shoot cameras. The contrast and color are extremely good since the lenses used in an SLR are of very good quality. It is an old maxim in the photography world that much of the quality in your images comes from the glass you put in front of the camera. The better the glass the better the photo, it worked in the film days and it still works in the digital age. The camera is important but dont skimp on the lens.
The photographer can change the lenses in an SLR, depending upon the shot that he/she plans to take. For example, a wide angle lens is used to take pictures of landscapes such as animals in the wild while telephoto lenses help to take extremely detailed pictures of small objects. Thus, one can pick and choose according to the environmental needs. Today some of the manufacturers have started building in image stabilization to their lenses. This really helps when taking long focal length images. While it uses additional power it can be extremely useful.
In addition to the above, the creative opportunity available to the photographer is much more in a SLR than a regular camera. This is because of the fact that a SLR has a lower contrast and image sharpening features. Hence, the photographer can do a lot of editing on his own to get the kind of effect that he desires. This can be viewed as a disadvantage as well by those who are not truly photo enthusiasts. So, for you guys, a point-and-shoot camera is the best option as not only is it cheaper but also adjusts things automatically.
Since a SLR is comparitvely more expensive than other digital cameras, it is very important that you get yourself a proper insurance for the camera. Especially if you plan to travel a lot with your SLR, insurance is extremely important. And also make sure that damage protection does form a part of the insurance deal as some insurance policies do not provide it. So, read the fine print before signing on the dotted line !

I have followed the instructions to the T. I have had it test twice and now it won't even turn on without giving me a PL (polluted) error message.



I am going to try and return it to see if they say it is defective, but by the looks of the workmanship I'm not holding my breath.

This book is about the preparation that goes into planning trips, the digital darkroom, file maintenance and to a certain extent the composition of the photo.



The photos in the book are ok but not great. They are normal day to day shots that most people take but I think thats part of the concept of the book was to use photos that most people could take so that they don't think to themselves "I cant take that shot". As an example there are shots of kids playing on a beach.



Where this book hits the mark is in it coverage photo manipulation, the hardware involved and how it works, cameras, computers, memory cards and card readers as well as software applications used in image manipulation. In detail it covers how a camera works. How lens's work. The book also describes how to compensate for environmental and lighting conditions and what can be done upfront while taking the picture to minimize any negative effect of light or environmental condition.



One of the helpful things about this book is that he uses the same photo in various stages of manipulation so that you can see what the effect is going to look like in all the stages of manipulation that he describes.



Also covered in the book are different conceptual ideas of photography like photo journalism, architectural photography, macro photography and landscape photography to name a few.



Overall this is a good book for the person just getting into digital photograph but I'm not sure that it will be of much use to the intermediate to advanced photographer thats already familiar with digital image manipulation.

This book was a revelation for me! I purchased a fairly advanced digital SLR without having a lot of experience, and have been struggling with learning all the nuances of photography and the equipment used. Lenses have been one of the biggest puzzles. What lenses should I get? Why does one 70-200mm lens cost $300 while another one costs $1700? How do I choose among telephotos and wide angle lenses? This book answers all those questions, and a lot more.



It's arranged in two page and four page layouts, with each set of pages dealing with a specific aspect of selecting or working with lenses. There are chapters on improving the quality of your results with any lens, using filters, and the correct use of every lens control. I learned about "bokeh," depth-of-field, perspective, and how to shoot great close-up pictures with the lenses I already have.

Customer Review: Doesn't teach much

I was not a total noob when I started this book, but wasn't very accomplished in photoshop either.



The problem with this book, is that they teach you how to create the lesson final product, but just have you push some buttons on the keyboard to reach that point, without ever giving you practical reason for why you're doing it. It does a very poor job of showing the different menu choices and what those menu choices accomplish. For example, very little was done with filters and showing how they work and what they accomplish.



The DVD/CD that comes with the book is virtually worthless. It just takes you through a series of button pushing sequences to get a final result, the exact same sequences the book walks you through. Totally redundant and without purpose.



Although in the end I learned a few things, overall, this book was a disappointment to me. I would not reccomend it to anyone that wants to learn photoshop from ground zero or has a remedial knowledge of it like I had.

All in all I have to say that the information in this book is pretty good. It has a reasonable and understandable flow and is very easy to follow. I like that there is one chapter just dedicated to what is new in CS3 and also there is a chapter that is easy to follow that describes what Adobe Bridge is all about. I am loving Bridge!



The three star rating is because I am EXTREMELY frustrated with the included lesson files on disk. I was going along great, enjoying the usefulness of files included, then when I was told to save them, they don't save. Possibly this is a glitch on my disk or not. But at any rate, all of my files are "read only" (yes I copied them onto my hard drive, I'm not trying to save on the DVD) and I cannot properly execute the tutorials without saving the files progress as I go along.



The book seems to be excellent. I am having a lot of trouble with the included DVD,

How Digital Cameras Work

A digital camera focuses light through a lens onto a sensor, that records images electronically. This electronic information is then converted into binary digital data, and stored on a fixed or a removable device for being read by a computer. Below is a more outlined way of understanding how digital cameras work.

1. The CCD

In practice, most digital cameras use a charge coupled device (CCD) as an image sensor. Some digital cameras use a complimentary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) instead. Both these sensors convert light into electrical charges, that are transferred to a storage disc. The sensors also filter the light into the three primary colors and then combine them to create the full spectrum. The more expensive cameras use three sensors. Each of them has a filter of a different color.

2. Light Control

Aperture and shutter speed is used to control the amount of light that reaches the sensor. The aperture setting is automatic in most digital cameras. Some cameras also allow manual control, for professionals and enthusiasts. The shutter, in contrast, is set electronically.

3. Lenses

The digital cameras use four kinds of lenses. These are: fixed-focus, fixed-zoom lenses; optical-zoom lenses with automatic focus; digital-zoom lenses, and replaceable lens systems. The fixed focus and fixed zoom lenses are used in inexpensive cameras while the optical zoom lenses have both wide and telephoto options. The digital zoom lens culls pixels from the central part of the image and enlarges them to fill the frame. Of course, this can at times result in a grainy or fuzzy image.

4. LCD Screen

This is the screen where you view the image. For better viewing or printing, the image needs to be transferred to a computer. The quality of the image depends on the resolution of a digital camera, and is measured in megapixels. The higher the resolution, the better is the image quality.

5. Resolution

The resolution is also important in deciding the size of printed photographs. A 1 megapixel digital camera will produce images that are good for e-mailing or posting on the Web. This is because their resolution is low. The images taken from a 2 megapixel camera are suitable for 4x5 inch prints while those taken from a 4 megapixel camera can produce 16x20 inch prints.

6. Memory

Most digital cameras store images within the camera on memory cards. These were then transferred with the help of cables to computers. Customer Review: Wish I shopped around before buying

I'm not satisfied with this prduct. I bought it on trusting the Celestron product team. I wanted it to work well with the SkyMaster 25x100 bino. The parts and construction of the tripod have too many cheap metal and cheap plastic parts for cost of the product. I question how reliable and long lasting the core worm drives will be. As noted by other buyers the legs are too short and there seems to be no easy way to get around this with a table, etc. I now wonder if Amazon would buy it back? Also how will I find a suitable triod with having to buy it first? Amazon sold this to me for $99, now less than one month later the price is $35. $35 is more appropriate but possibly not worth the annoyances.

I have been very disappointed with this product. The overall height is wrong for any situation I can find to use it. I bought it to use with astronomy binoculars. It is too short to use standing and too tall to use sitting, at least for me. (I'm 5'9"). It is solid enough to not shake much and the fine adjustment works well. I would shop around before buying this one. If there were a height adjustment, it would be much better.

My mom got this for my 5 year-old for his birthday. The main interest was that it is a camera, and of course it was a nice bonus that it had the "Cars" theme. It is absolute junk. We're currently looking to see if there are any other kid-friendly cameras that will take a half-way decent picture in a similar price-range. You'd be better off just bying a toy camera, at least there is no expectation that you'd get a picture you could make out. If you'd like to get your child another "Cars" toy, just get him/her a toy car. So far, I'd say those are the only "Cars" toys we have that are well made (assuming of course they don't have lead paint).

this is a really tiny camera. perfect for small hands. it comes with the software system called disney pics. its a really cool program once you figure it out. it was a little complicated even for us adults, and came with no instructions. the kids who are small enough to use the camera won't be able to use the software system. plus, its a digital camera, but you can't view your pictures after you take them. i just assumed with a digital camera that you could view the pictures as you take them, but not with this camera. the camera does take good pictures, esp for something so small. and the editing program is good for other purposes. we've used it to make invitations. so for the price, its an ok gift. i just wish you could view the pics as you take them.

Customer Review: Sorry Excuse for a Camera!

Ditto on both of the previous reviews!!! Please take them seriously because they know what they are talking about. I would have rated this product with a negative 3 stars if I could have! Unfortunately, I purchased this as a gift for my daughter and she did not get to use it, while snorkeling, until 6 months after the purchase date, so I cannot return this piece of junk! We also followed the directions for underwater usage. We used this "camera" at a depth of less than 2 feet. The case leaked and the pictures that the camera did take were so inadequate that I wish I hadn't bothered. The camera was also complicated to use (not a "point & shoot") and timed-out/turned off automatically so quickly that it was never ready when we needed it. Definitely not user-friendly and was a nuisance and distraction while we were snorkeling because we spent too much time trying to use the camera. The real disappointment is that I would have had decent pictures if I had used a disposable camera like I have in the past!



PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY on this piece of plastic. I have plenty of experience with digital devices for all sorts of media uses. Many of these, I have purchased through Amazon or other vendors. My research always pays off, but I made a real mistake on this one because I was trying to purchase a simple digital camera that my 10-year old could use under water -- my mistake -- I should have been more diligent in my research. Amazon would be doing their customers a huge favor if they would STOP SELLING THIS PRODUCT!!

Launching stuff into the air is fun..ask anyone...launching stuff into the air that subsequently takes a picture movie of you doing it? Yeah...thats a great invention. LOVE this toy. Nephews loved getting it and loved playing with it. They live out in the country so it was easy to operate.

My wife purchased this rocket for my birthday and I couldn't wait to launch it. Let me tell you that the video is very good considering that it is a micro camera in the nosecone of a rocket. It's absolutely amazing watching the liftoff, apogee, and the recovery first hand!



You can set up the rocket to record with the camera pointed up or down during the recovery. I have tried it pointing up - hoping to see the parachute, but I'm going to change it to point down. it should be a fun video to watch.



I highly recommend this rocket. Especially if you have enjoyed watching the video of the NASA rocket launches.

Similarly for any digital camera too, a good battery is necessary in order to ensure an excellent performance from it as long as possible. Being such a crucial task as if searching for a good heart for a human being, perhaps the most tedious thing about digital cameras is the quest for their battery consumption and thereby finding a suitable one for any particular one. Yet a basic overview regarding this so important component of a digital camera makes the ventures of the users somewhat less complicated and makes life easier with a proper selection of the battery!

Leaving aside the ever power thirsty LCD screens and flashes, the digital cameras themselves exhaust batteries much faster than film cameras, due to their state of the art electronic designs and intricate circuitry. Many digital cameras run from AA cells, around 4, and can even drain a set of alkaline cells in less than 1 hour of working! For example, the Kodak DC120 draws about 210mA during start or switch ON, but progresses to around 1.3A with the association of the LCD fully working and can go ahead to about 2.1A while picture taking and after it too.

With all these nightmares regarding the batteries of the digital cameras, it is worthwhile to analyze and reveal some of the available batteries for the digital cameras in an effort to explore area of power consumption in this fantastic device. Coming to first one of these, like its great name suggests, it is the Li-ion (Lithium Ion). It is one of the latest cell types available to digital camera users. This has many advantages to its credit. It is light in weight and currently available for many commercial uses and thus being so the Li-ion (Lithium Ion) battery type is becoming quite popular. This has an added advantage of being able to endow with more power than any of the other main cell types available. It is also free from the problems of memory effect, hat some battery types do have, and maintenance is least in this type of battery. These are but real goodies about this Li-ion (Lithium Ion) battery. Yet it has one major disadvantage, that is, the price is usually significantly higher than conventional batteries, due to its sophisticated design and technology.

Coming to the next one in the line, the NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride). This is a battery that is perhaps the most frequently under use for not only digital cameras, but also for other sophisticated devices like laptop computers! This has the advantage of being cheap in price due to the fact that it incurs cheap manufacturing costs, and thus a choice for many users! But this does have the problems of memory effect, and much more maintenance and care is required while handling this kind of battery.

Another such battery is the NiCAD (Nickel Cadmium) Battery. This is perhaps belonging to one of the older cell types generally available for older laptops and electronic devices. These batteries or cells have an aptitude for handling high power loads, and therefore is more frequently found in handy power tools and devices that require more amounts power to work efficiently and perfectly. Yet again, these batteries too have the problems of memory effect, and much more maintenance and care is required while handling this kind of battery.

Apart from the different batteries themselves, the selection should be based upon the charging techniques and the different charges available for all these digital camera batteries. Latest batteries come handy with charging free techniques too! So care needs to be taken in this area also, depending upon the requirements of the user.

With all the vivid conversation regarding the hearts of the digital cameras, their batteries, it is expected for every person going through the lines to have grabbed a significant amount of information in dealing with the intricacies of the purchase, and thereby also augment the ability of the person in using such a sophisticated device as a digital camera with a proper battery!

Purchased rather on a whim along with my Flip camera and am grateful I did. The mechanics are very simple and user-friendly, and my girls like the interchangeable tips. I agree with an earlier reviewer that the packaging was a bit excessive. I purchased the Flip intending for it to get a lot of young use around our house, and it has. The children make delightful, spontaneous videos, but their camera work can be dizzying. When they use the tripod, their videos are infinitely more viewable by adults.



I think a necessary addition for young users.

Overall:

I have this system installed for about a month now, and for the price I paid, it's truely awesome.



Installation and use:

The 4 cameras installed easily and the PCI card fit into my Dell with no issues at all. The VistaPro software is fairly easy to use once you get the hang of it.



What I like about it:

The software is capable of handling up to 9 cameras, so with 2 PCI cards, 8 cameras would be a snap. I love being able to sit in my office and see everything that is going on around my house with a simple glance at the monitor.



What I don't like:

The cameras don't zoom in or adjust in ANY way on this model. In order to zoom, I need to upgrade my cameras. The other thing that I learned is that the system uses S-Video cables which is 4-Din and most other systems use 6-Din. I needed to add about 20 feet of lenght to 1 cable and ordered the extension cable from Lorex. I found out that this cable was of the 6-Din variety and it wouldn't work with my system. This also makes it a bit challenging when trying to find cameras for an upgrade.



The night vision on these cameras is a joke. In my opinion, they should take the night vision statement off the box. You couldn't see a semi-truck with this system at night if it was 5 feet away.



Recommended:

Yes, I absolutely love this system for someone that's on a budget and wants to have cameras around the outside of there home to keep an eye on things. You won't be able to pinpoint details like you would with a more expensive system, but for the $250 I spent for it, it's a steal!!!

It bought the same camera at Walgreens for $10 and it is not even worth that amount. The photos come out extremely hazy and small. The pictures are worse than the ones on my cameraphone. And there is no little LCD screen for you to see what you are taking a picture of.

I warn you, this camera is a waste of money. it does take up to 247 pictures, but those are low resolution and compressed. It only takes 20 high resolution pictures (which still are bad and fuzzy). AND THAT'S IT! NO MORE! And nowhere in the manual or on the page does it say that.
